Laurino
The history of the ancient “Civitas Laurini” (City of Laurino) was probably more glorious than nowadays.In fact, across the centuries the City-hall, whose population reached almost 25000 inhabitants, conquered such power to expand its hegemony all over the entire land of the high Calore Valley, also thanks to artists, intellectual people, craftsmen who gave boost to the local economy.Among the famous people in Culture, Arts and Medicine, the character of Sir Agostino Magliani stands out, since he has been appointed several times as Minister of the Kingdom towards the end of the last centuy, he was also a great politician and an expert economist, such that the village of Laurino still remembers him with pride and, a few years ago, decide to dedicate him two plates, of which one is placed at the entrance of the City-hall and another one is placed in front of his birthplace’s home. Of course, recent history sees Laurino, as some as the whole rest of South Italy, involved in the social-economic-cultural events of the time, among which population decrease due to massive emigration.Today Laurino is a small village of 1950 inhabitants situated in the South of Salerno province, in the heart of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park and is declared as UNESCO world-heritage site.
